What is U trough Screw Conveyor ?

A U trough Screw Conveyor is a type of horizontal material conveying equipment which consist of horizontal U trough in which screw shaft rotates and conveys the material from one point to an another point. This is the type of material handling equipment which is used to transport granular or powdered materials from one point to another within a production or processing system. It gets its name from the U-shaped trough which has screw blades shaft inside. This design is commonly used for applications requiring gentle material handling and efficient conveying.

Here's an overview of the components and functioning of a pipe screw conveyor:

  • U trough : The main important part of a U trough screw conveyor is its U shape trough, which serves as both the containment structure for the feed materials which are to be transported from one point to another point. Inside this U trough, screw flights are rotates via main shaft. The material of construction of U trough can be made as per the suitability with feed material characteristics and as per the application requirement.

  • Screw Blade (Auger): The U trough screw conveyor includes screw blades or augur which is been across the entire length of U trough. Very minimum gap is being maintained between outer surface of screw blade and inside surface of U trough. The pitch and diameter of screw blade is designed as per the calculating various factors like conveying speed, and physical properties of feed material.

  • Drive Mechanism: The drive mechanism consist of electric motor and gear reducer so as to fix the desired speed of screw shaft. The selection of drive speed and power are depend upon the type of feed material which needs to be transported.

  • Inlet and Outlet: To feed the material inside U trough screw conveyor inlet point is to be provided and to discharge the material from U trough screw conveyor the outlet is provided at opposite point from inlet point. The inside helical screw design of blades pushes the material from Inlet point to Outlet point.

  • Seals and Covers: Various seals and covers are required to prevent the material leakage, and to prevent material spillage, to prevent dust escape, and to protect the conveyed feed materials from external factors such as moisture and contamination.

  • Hanger Bearings: Hanger bearings are often used to support the rotating screw blade at specific intervals along the length of the U trough. These bearings help to prevent sagging of the screw blade and reduce friction.

  • Intermediate Sections: Depending on the length and design of the conveyor, intermediate sections may be used to facilitate changes in direction, elevation, or orientation of the pipe screw conveyor.
